Blitzing Blackpool Waiting List

IVS provided staff and high quality portable colourflow duplex ultrasound equipment for 10 days between 8th December 2005 and 1st February 2006. Despite the constraints of the Christmas holiday period, 240 mixed vascular investigations were performed allowing Blackpool to reduce the waiting time to less than 20 weeks.

Quote Stewart Whitley Radiology Manager Blackpool Victoria Hospital

"Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospital NHS Trust along with many acute trusts in the country have been challenged in meeting the new Government Choice of Scan targets.

Realising that ultrasound scans fell into the target group of procedures from 1st April 2006 undertook a detailed analysis of ultrasound examination types which were most likely to breach from 1st April.

Our main pressures were determined as carotid Doppler and leg vein mapping and with the patient number identified and the capacity available were presented with a major problem.

The only solution was to undertake a waiting list initiative and thanks to IVS we were able to bring our lists under control by undertaking block sessions at Fleetwood hospital. Thanks to co-operation all round we undertook 240 examinations in a matter of a few of weeks with no DNAs. Positive feedback from both patients and users indicate that this was a successful initiative and a great example of the NHS and the IS working in partnership."
